Nudism as protest

Top free equality protest have been in the news a lot lately. It got me thinking about connections between nudity and protests. How do nude protests relate to nudism? What are the positives and negatives of the connection?

Nudity has been used as a way to give voice to protesters and show solidarity with a cause for centuries. From the legendary Lady Godiva to the World Naked Bike Ride. But is the nudity of protest governed by the same principles of nudism?

So observers have noted that recent WNBR events have become all about the public nudity and not as much of a focus on green energy and reducing the use of fossil fuels. That was the original intent of the ride. Similarly observers of the recent top free protests suggest the events brought out more gawkers than anything.

The downside is that, the assembly area where naked people prepare before the ride starts, attracts many voyeurs and male pests with mobile phone cameras. Naked flesh is common in advertising, yet the sight of it live, female in particular, appears to bring out ulterior motives in some lonely men.

Do these public nudity protests serve the greater goal of nudism and naturism? Or do they muddy the waters by tying nudism to divergent causes?
