“It was so liberating to experience.”
On paper, the idea of doing naked yoga is nightmarish — not only exposing your body to a room of strangers, but twisting it into deeply unflattering poses. But it could be the perfect path to shedding your body shame and feeling whole in your skin.
This month, the Yoga Loft in Newcastle staged its first nude yoga class since opening almost four-and-a-half years ago.
The Loft team expected the all-women class to grab attention. But it proved wildly popular: a post announcing the event went modestly viral on Facebook, and the class booked out within a week — the majority of them students new to the Loft.
Cveta Jovanoska, the Yoga Loft’s owner and head teacher, says many of her regular students were jittery about stripping.
“Leading up to it, they were like, ‘Oh goodness, you don’t want to see me naked!'” she tells Coach.
But while there were nerves in the studio before the class, Jovanoska was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the participants were when it started.
“As soon as everyone stripped down after five minutes, they were fine. It felt normal,” she says.
