From the Greek – gymnos “naked” and sophia “wisdom” is the name given to a philosophy practiced in Europe and the USA from the end of the 19th century to the mid 20th century. The practice involved nudity, asceticism and meditation. The term was used by Alexander the Great to the describe naked wise men (gymnosophists) he encountered in India.
